Many conventionally used materials such as leather, wool, down, feathers, and silk, are marketed as natural, luxurious, or timeless. But their origins often involve unnecessary harm, suffering, and death.
Leather is a co-product of the meat industry, and products made with leather are typically not labeled by species (i.e. it’s not just cows).
Wool often comes from large herds of sheep, where aggressive shearing, infections, and tail docking are common.
Down and feathers may be plucked from live birds or taken from birds raised and killed for bedding.
Silk is most often created by boiling silkworms alive in their cocoons.
These materials are then sterilized and treated with chemical processes to meet industry standards — leaving both ethical and environmental consequences behind.
